ONYX Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a family-owned academy located right on Queen Street in the heart of Campbelltown. We have been a fixture in the BJJ community since 2020 and have been providing the most comprehensive jiu jitsu, quality teaching and good vibes ever since!

What's in a name?

Protection. Powerful. Grounding.

The Onyx stone is said to have many positive qualities including being helpful in grounding and balancing yourself. It’s also known to work well as a protective stone, one that bears truly powerful vibrations of strength, focus, protection, and willpower. It is also believed to drive motivation and push you forward in life. These traits of the onyx are what underpin the ethos of our academy.

Why Nought's & Crosses?

Strategy. Tactics.

The incorporation of noughts and crosses is a play on the ‘O’ and ‘X’ in the word ONYX, but most importantly it represents strategy and tactics, both important aspects of BJJ. After all, Jiu Jitsu is renowned for being the thinking-person’s sport of choice!

What is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?

Grapple. Submission. Technique

BJJ originated from the traditional Japanese form of Jiu-Jitsu. The key concept is that the size of an individual doesn’t affect the ability to defend oneself against a larger opponent. When a smaller competitor uses leverage and weight distribution, they are then able to enhance physical strength and manipulate their opponent into a position where holds and submission techniques can be used.

When both opponents are grounded, they can utilise techniques depending on their position on the mat. If positioned on top of their opponent, maintaining control and submitting the opponent is the goal. If positioned underneath, they are then focused on protection and forcing their opponent off or switching positions to gain the advantage.

There is a multitude of techniques and counter techniques that can be used in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, including attacks, escapes, and submissions. This discipline focuses heavily on grappling, submission, and technique rather than striking. This Mixed Martial Arts form has no age limits, and it’s easy to see why the sport is seeing so much growth in popularity in recent years.

Professor Ian

Experienced. The Real Deal.

Professor Ian has made quite the name for himself within the BJJ community, and it stands to reason that he is quite simply one of the most knowledgeable black belt professors in our local Campbelltown community and beyond.

He has over 20 years of experience in his training and has learned what he knows from the one of the first BJJ practitioners in Australia, and UFC fighter - Anthony Perosh. In essence, Professor Ian's training stems from the teachings that go all the way back to none other than Carlos Machado. So, you can be 100% certain, that what you take away from Professor Ian, is in fact 100% the real deal.

While Professor Ian is no stranger to competition over the years, these days you will find him teaching, coaching from the comp sidelines, and sharing his wealth of knowledge with his team.

Professor Ian is said to be very humble, friendly, and approachable, and always has time for a laugh, or to go over that technique that you're just not getting.

There is a team spirit and real community within Professor Ian's academy that is hard to replicate, and that comes down to good people.
